SAFEGUARDING & CHILD PROTECTION

Safeguarding Online

Eternal Light Secondary School fully recognises its responsibilities for child protection.

“Because of their day to day contact with individual children during the school terms, teachers and other school staff are particularly well placed to observe the outward signs of abuse, changes in behaviour or failure to develop.” Working Together to Safeguard Children

E Safety

E-safety, which covers ‘online safety’ or ‘Internet Safety’, is a crucial part of modern education.  Schools have a remit not only to ensure good e-safety practice in school but also to deliver the education required to allow pupils and students to make critical judgements and keep themselves safe when using the Internet and communications technology when away from the school environment.

Anti Bullying

It is never acceptable to bully someone. It is not how a Muslim deals with another person. If you are making someone feel uncomfortable or unhappy then you should change your behaviour. Everyone has a right to feel safe and happy in our School.

If you suspect someone is being bullied, come and talk to your form tutor, subject teachers, senior students, Student Council, DSL (Designated Safeguarding Lead) Moulana Hassan, Mufti Annas, Hfz Nasir, our CWO (Child Welfare Officers) Moulana Abdur Raqeeb, Moulana Feizal Patel & the Headteacher, Moulana Yusuf Collector.

Anti-Bullying Week

As part of the schools drive to tackle all aspects of bullying, pupils take part each year in Anti-Bullying Week and other similar workshops and lessons to help raise awareness of the harms of bullying. This is also taught from an Islamic perspective using teachings from the Quran and Hadith of our beloved Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).

Anti-Bullying Week helps our school to shine a spotlight on bullying and encourage all children, teachers and parents to take action against bullying throughout the year.

You can access our free anti-bullying online information tool here.

Pupils revisit this topic throughout the school year to help remind us all the harms of bullying and how Islam does not allow any type of zulm (oppression) to anyone whatever their race, creed, religion or colour.

Child Protection

Eternal Light Secondary School fully recognises its responsibilities for child protection.

“Nothing is more important than children’s welfare. Children who need help and protection deserve high quality and effective support as soon as a need is identified.”

“Whilst it is parents and carers who have primary care for their children, local authorities, working with partner organisations and agencies, have specific duties to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children in their area.” Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018

All adults who are working with or on behalf of children have a responsibility to protect them.

There are, however, key people within schools, Education Bradford and the Local Authority who have specific responsibilities under child protection procedures. The names of those carrying out these responsibilities are;

Yusuf Collector            Headteacher

Hassan Khan             (Lead Named Person – DSL)

Mohammed Anas Shah (DSL)

Nasir Khan                  (DSL)

Abdul Raqeeb              (Child Welfare Officer)

Frank Hand                 Bradford Education – Bradford Council

Dawn Holt                    Bradford Education – Bradford Council

Prevent

The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 places a duty on schools and colleges to safeguard their pupils from being drawn into terrorism.

The definition of Radicalisation covers;

“vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. We also include in our definition of extremism calls for the death of members of our armed forces, whether in this country or overseas”.

Radicalisation is defined as the act or process of making a person more radical or favouring of extreme or fundamental changes in political, economic or social conditions, institutions or habits of the mind. Extremism is defined as the holding of extreme political or religious views.

We encourage pupils to respect the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths, beliefs and respect for people as described under the  Protected Characteristics. We ensure that partisan political views are not promoted in the teaching of any subject in the school and where political issues are bought to the attention of the pupils; reasonable steps have been taken to offer a balanced presentation of opposing views to pupils.
